Gold Coast: $108 Million Budget for Road Upgrades
More then $100 million is allocated to quicken road upgrades across the city in preparation for next year’s Commonwealth Games. The Gold Coast will be bustling leading up to and for the duration of the event as the city anticipates “66,000 athletes and officials, 50,000 workers and volunteers, 3000 media personnel and up to 1.2 million spectators.”
Majority of significant roadworks are expected to be completed by the end of this calendar year and are expected improve the flow of traffic, reducing bottlenecks, especially in major areas.
According to Gold Coast Bulletin, the major upgrades would include:
* $3.2 million to upgrade the intersection of Southport’s High and Smith streets, linking with the $104 million Bundall Road upgrade.
* $360,000 to reseal Nielsens Road at Carrara near the Commonwealth Games sports precinct.
*$650,000 to upgrade the intersection of Gold Coast highway and Waterways Drive in Main Beach.
* $620,000 for the reconstruction of Beattie Road through to Foxwell Road in Upper Coomera.
* $8.5 million for ongoing works on Ormeau’s Brunside Road to support the influx of development and industry.
The program will be executed in conjunction with major State Government roadworks to avoid major inconvenience to motorists.
And while the road upgrades are critical to the event’s success, the improvements are also intended to benefit the northern corridor’s billions worth of planned developments, a majority of which are well underway. The city is expecting an influx of new residents, job hunters and businesses after identifying several growth areas.
