Westfield Loses Court Battle to Block Rival Mega Shopping Centre
Westfield , the developers of the Coomera Town Centre, has just failed in their legal attempts to block the the construction of a rival mega shopping centre in Upper Coomera.
Simon Lee’s company Lewani Springs the original developer of the Coomera Square shopping centre in Upper Coomera was successful in blocking Westfield appeal of their Gold Coast City Council development approval.
Gold Coast Bulletin reports
The case has been hotly contested in the Planning and Environment Court in Brisbane but has finally settled after all sides were ordered into meetings and signed confidentiality agreements to protect Westfield’s trading data.
According to court documents Lewani Springs will now be allowed to go ahead with its plans as long as the mega supermarket does not open until December 2017.
Construction on the supermarket is not even allowed to start until September 2016, or if it does the supermarket must be smaller.
A raft of other conditions must also be met before the complex which also includes office space, 24-hour fast food outlets and motor repair shop can be built at City Centre Drive.
It is not the only appeal Westfield has made against northern Gold Coast developments. Council approval for expansion of a site known as Homeworld Helensvale on Hope Island Road was also appealed by Westfield on the basis it too would erode the customer base for the Coomera Town Centre
